I would think your best bet would be to attend some forays and talk to the people there. Personally i go for the enjoyment of being in the woods and looking for some good eats.- 1 reply

It is one of the stinkhorns. Posibly elegant stinkhorn( Mutinus elegans)

Depends on if it is a true bicolor or one of the look alikes. The bicolor is edible the look alikes are not. -

Yes it is Polyporus Aleolaris and is related to dryads saddle (Polyporus Squamosus) -
