  • Hoosier Mushroom Society Education Grants

    The purpose of these education grants will be to provide Hoosier Mushroom Society members with the opportunity to attend national forays across the country. The intent is to cover all or portions of travel expenses, registration fees, and/or lodging, for major events, giving opportunities for members to gain knowledge that can be brought back to the State of Indiana. These events may include, but are not limited to, events for the Mycological Society of America, the North American Mycological Association, the North Eastern Mycological Federation, the Telluride Mushroom Festival, and others.

    We will post specific awards that are available in the newsletter and on our Facebook page. You are welcome to submit an application for any event related to mycology. Awards will be granted as funding permits and at the discretion of the Board.

    Award Amount: up to $500.
    Application deadline: One month before event of interest
    Requirements: Applicants must be current members of the Hoosier Mushroom Society in order to apply, with a documented interest in mushrooms and advancing the science of mycology within Indiana.
    Documents required:
    A brief letter that describes your interest in fungi, your past efforts to advance mycology, and how you intend to promote mycology in the future in Indiana.
    A description of the event you want to attend and the costs you are looking to have covered.

    The HMS President will submit the document to the HMS Board for review. All applicants will be notified of the decision of the board in writing. Scholarship awards shall be announced at a general membership meeting and in the HMS newsletter.

    Payments: Payments will be made in a single installment before the event. For the best chance of getting an award, please apply as soon as possible before the event.

    Hoosier Mushroom Society Research Award

    This award supports students who are interested in advancing mycology in the State of Indiana through scientific research. Proposals can come from any branch of mycology, but preference will be given to researchers looking at the higher fungi - mushrooms.

    Award Amount: up to $1000.
    Application deadline: July 31, annually
    Requirements: Applicants must be working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree at an Indiana community college, college, or university and receive academic credit for the project. Applicants are not required to be members of the Hoosier Mushroom Society to apply. At the conclusion of the project, applicants must present the project at a general meeting of The Hoosier Mushroom Society.

    Hoosier Mushroom Society and/or other approved venue, as well as allow the results to be printed in our newsletter. Research data are the property of the researcher, except that research data may be published in the HMS newsletter and on the HMS website.

    Documents required:
    Cover letter
    Proposal of not more than 6 single-spaced pages that includes the rationale for the study and the hypotheses to be tested, a detailed description of the site to be studied, methodologies to be used, description of the study design, including specifics on the time line to complete the proposal (generally one year), and a plan for dissemination of results. References and a generalized budget should be included within the 6 page limit.
    A letter of support from the major professor.
    Copy of the permit or letter requesting a permit if it is needed to work in a sensitive site.

    The HMS President will submit the proposal documents to the HMS Board for review. All applicants will be notified of the decision of the board in writing. The Board may suggest proposal modifications. Research awards shall be announced at a general membership meeting and in the HMS newsletter.

    Payments: Payments will be made in two equal installments. The first installment will be given upon announcement and acceptance of the award by the recipient. The final payment will be given upon presentation of the results. Recipients who fail to submit a final project within one year of the date of the first payment shall forfeit further payment unless an extension is granted by a vote of the HMS Board.
