Following the picture I harvested the mushroom. I scoured the internet and found several very similar photos and text that it was an early chicken of the woods. I cooked a small portion (two bites) and found that it does taste like chicken. I waited two days and had no ill effects. Following I had several meals of it with no ill effects, but it is not my favorite eating mushroom and will probably limit my harvesting of it in the future. Next time I would like to try a slightly more mature example.
Found growing at base of old honey locust yesterday. I believe it to be Chicken of the Woods (Cincinnati’s). Not growing in shelf like pattern but vertical up from tree roots.
