Poisoning in cat?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, and thanks in advance for any input.

Since this is no longer an emergency situation, I figured this would be the best place to come for any help.

My cat, Itty, passed away last night from what I suspect to be mushroom poisoning, she had recently decided that she wanted to be an indoor/outdoor cat after our other cat passed Memorial Day weekend after being an indoor cat for the first 10 years of her life. She had always been a very healthy cat, except for ongoing allergy issues. Starting on Monday, she became very lethargic, was vomiting, and was walking around almost like she was drunk. This was not like normal cat vomit, but closer to what looked like human vomit. Other than the normal warm ears and third eyelid, she had no other symptoms. On Tuesday, her vomiting was slowing down, and she was moving around more. On Wednesday, she was moving around more, attempting to jump onto things, and doing her normal verbalizations when you pet her. Then last night (I was at work so this is all a 3rd party recollection) she had what appeared to be a seizure. When they attempted to pick her up she let out what sounded like a little girl screaming for her life, she then threw up what looked like lemon custard, collapsed in it, and fell into either a catatonic state or a coma. She was gone within in the hour. When she was sick, she never appeared to be deathly ill. I have dealt with a few cats in their final days and she never acted like they did, which leads me to believe this was not an illness, but the doings of something she got into on one of her adventures.

I apologize if this is not the right place to bring this question, I would just like some peace of mind knowing the cause of her abrupt decline.

Thanks again for reading and for any input.

Why would you think that she died from mushroom poisoning? I've never even heard of a cat eating mushrooms.

I would be much more suspicious of pharmaceutical products, like vaccines, medication or flea poison, without knowing the history.

Did you recently start giving her chemical flea treatments?
