About Me

  1. I found a bunch of these mushrooms under some pine/fir trees. I think they are bolete or boletus variety, but can anyone help identify them for me? Are these edible? I washed the mushrooms in this photo so the underside is more brown looking than it really is -- it was yellow when dry. Some of the stems have a red striation to them (King Bolete perhaps?), but most are white to yellow. The flesh of the mushroom is white or yellowish-white. From what I've read most boletes are edible, but some are poisonous and can make you sick (but not deadly) -- is this accurate? Thanks everyone!
  2. Here's a photo from very early October of last year, taken at Raccoon SRA. These mushrooms were plentiful in the grass under and around what appeared to be white pine trees. Caps were pretty slimy. Compares favorably to Suillus americanus but I would like a second opinion. Also, if anyone has eaten any Suillus and would like to share their experience on that I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
  3. I was very excited to find a large bolete on this afternoon's mushroom excursion. Many boletes are delicious and this one was a full six inches across! Unfortunately, it seemed to best match the description of the common Bitter Bolete -- edible but not palatable. I cut out a small sliver of the cap and tasted it and sure enough...eech! Not to worry, though; I still managed to collect about three pounds each of oyster mushrooms and mixed chanterelles before the mosquitoes chased me home.
