Thursday, 07 February 2013 00:08 Conner Prairie BioBlitz June 8th and 9th Volunteer Manual & Information If you have never been to a Bioblitz before, they are an amazing way to learn about nature from the top experts in many different fields. There are usually specialists on plants, mammals, birds, insects, and of course, fungi. The goal of a bioblitz is to catalog the total number of living species in a given area. This page will be updated as more information is available. As of now, I do not have the times when this will be occurring on Saturday and Sunday. I also have a question about camping at the event which will be answered shortly as well. If you would like to attend, please email steve@hoosiermushrooms.org with your name and how many will be attending. I would like to get a count for the organizers well before the event. Check-In will be located in the Bayt Pavilion) After Orientation Survey Begins 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Catered Dinner (Bayt Pavilion) Sunday, June 9th 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Continental Breakfast (Bayt Pavilion) Noon Survey Officially Ends 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Presentation of Findings (Featherston Barn) Information from the organizers follows: Hello Everyone, This year the Indiana Academy of Science through the Biodiversity and Natural Areas Committee is helping to sponsor a two day [Saturday through Sunday, June 8th & 9th] bioblitz at Conner Prairie, Fishers, IN [just north of Indy]. The bioblitz will be coupled with a festival, i.e., a series of interactive events between Conner Prairie staff, various partners throughout the state, and the public; even members of the bioblitz who wish to interact with the public can. The basic habitats at the site include a number of restored prairies, pastures/fields, woodlands, and a riparian corridor along the White River. The site consists of approximately 800 acres (see attached map of the site). As always, we are looking for volunteers to participate in the bioblitz. You have been contacted because you have participated in one or more of the IAS sponsored bioblitzes in the last four years. This year I will organize the bioblitz participants and Gail Brown and staff at the site will organize the festival and bioblitz schedule. For the participants, Saturday dinner, Sunday continental breakfast, and snacks for both days will be provided. To engage the public in the actual survey, one of the barns will be turned into a bioblitz HQ. This would provide work space for anyone on the survey, and serve as a place where updates could be provided, specimens displayed, pictures shared, etc. with guests. In addition, the Prairie House at the site will be used for indoor camping. It is a large carpeted room with restroom facilities where folks could sleep on the floor. The yearly dues will be $15 for an individual and $20 for a family. Wednesday, 12 September 2012 23:15 We are meeting with a group of Lafayette mushroom hunters for our (maybe annual) fall foray in their area. On the 29th of September, we will meet at Ross Hills Park. It is about 10 minutes west of West Lafayette in Tippecanoe County. Thursday, 30 August 2012 15:06 We are fortunate enough to have a great Mycologist coming to our state on September 8th - the same date that we were planning on Lieber Recreational area in Cloverdale. I am going to cancel our hike, and would encourage you to attend this hike. Dr. Methven is a specialist in Lactarius species, and knows the Midwestern species very well. The Shades State Park area has received the most rain in the state, so that is where the mushrooms are. I was there the 28th and 29th, and mushrooms are everywhere. Mosquitoes and other annoying insects possible. What To See: Shades State Park is located about 17 miles southwest of Crawfordsville. The beautiful sandstone cliffs overlooking Sugar Creek and numerous shady ravines provide the backdrop for a journey through a nature lover’s (and, when wet, a mushroom hunter’s) paradise. We will collect mushrooms for 1.5 to 2 hrs and then return to the picnic area for lunch and to look at our specimens. If you have one, bring a hand lens. You should also bring a basket or backpack to collect mushrooms in. I’ll bring wax bags and plastic containers for your specimens. Thursday, 07 June 2012 18:25 Paynesville SRA Foray June 16th, 2012 - 1pm This event has been cancelled due to lack of rain and no mushrooms. The first organized outing of the year for the Hoosier Mushroom Society will be on June 16th, 2012 at 1pm. Paynestown SRA is located just south of Bloomington, IN near Lake Monroe on Highway 446. We will be meeting in a large gravel parking lot on the north side of the main road, where the Whitetail Trail meets the Nature Trails. This location has a mix of oak-hickory forests, as well as a section of pine. This is a chance for people to learn about mushrooms in their natural environments. Attendees walk through the woods, identifying and collecting mushrooms as they go. At the end, we will meet as a group and go over what was found, as well as the key identifying features. The summer mushrooms are just starting to come out, so we should have a nice assortment of finds. This PHD Center is on Lake St. in the Miller part of Gary. Follow google map directions to PHD then just past the parking lot for that on the east side of the road (and just north a foot bridge) there is a little parking lot on the west side of the road. I usually park there as sometimes the other one is closed. At about 1-1:30ish, we’ll head to the oak forest just west of the National Park HQ at 1100 N Mineral Springs Rd, Porter, IN 46304. Tuesday, 15 March 2011 22:29 Learn Morel Mushrooms Tom Nauman from Morel Mania will be in Bloomington on Saturday April 9th to give a presentation on Morel Mushrooms. The event will take place at RCA Park in Bloomington, IN. Tom will give a discussion on morels, followed by a Q&A, which will be followed by a hunt in the woods around the park. The event will start at 1 pm. Brown County Mushroom Hunt The first event of the Hoosier Mushroom Society will be held on Saturaday, April 16, 2011 in Brown County Indiana. We are organizing this event with another group, so we will release the exact location much closer to the final date. We are going to have a staggered schedule throughout the day, so you can come and enjoy the day with us as your time permits. We are using the ticketing system here just to get an idea about how many people we should plan on attending. You can come without a ticket, but we request that you reserve one for our planning purposes. It has been extraordinarily hot, and will likely continue to be so, be sure to look at the weather before the event. If there are heat advisories for either of these days, then the event will be canceled. (It is 94 with a heat index of 115 as I write this in Bloomington.) Any such advisory will be posted on this page. Also, we were originally going to be out at Salamonie on the 16th, but I went out there a couple days ago, and it was virtually devoid of fungi. July 16th – Griffey Woods (Bloomington, IN) First, this upcoming Saturday, July 16th, we will be meeting at Griffey Woods in Bloomington, IN. We will meet at the parking lot on Hadley/Hinkle Rd. on the North side of Griffey Reservoir. Meeting time will be at 3pm and we will walk for an hour or so. July 23rd – Salamonie Reservoir (Andrews, IN) – Tree & Mushroom ID The next meeting will take place July 23rd at 3pm. We are going to be meeting at Salamonie Reservoir – Lost Bridge West SRA. We will be walking along Tree Trail. Salamonie Reservoir is located just east of Wabash Indiana. Lost Bridge West SRA is a wooded area on the south side of the reservoir. It is located just north of the intersection of IN-105 and IN-124. Going north on 105, turn left to go towards Lost Bridge West. Enter into the park, and there will be a $5 fee per car, unless you have a yearly DNR pass ($38). Follow the road all the way back to the boat ramp near the reservoir. On the backside of the parking lot is the entrance to the Tree Trail where we will meet. Aside from mushrooms, the tree trail will give everyone a chance to review or to become better acquainted with tree identification. Friday, 03 September 2010 17:31 The next meeting of this organization will take place September 11th at 3pm. We are going to be meeting at Morgan-Monroe State Forest. There is a shelter located near Cherry Lake - at the junction of Forest Rd. and Service Rd. There is a large picnic area, and it is close to the forest office. As with the last event, we would ask everyone to bring a good food or drink item so we can have a pitch-in dinner at the end of the event. Also, BYOB/cocktails. IF WE CONTINUE THIS CYCLE OF NO RAIN, THIS EVENT WILL BE POSTPONED. PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL, OUR BLOG, OR OUR FACEBOOK PAGE BEFORE THE EVENT TO MAKE SURE IT IS STILL ON AS SCHEDULED. We will work through the key together, learning some of the identification basics about what to look for, and how to use a key to identify mushrooms. Also, be sure to check on your stem butt cultures. Just open the bag and the cardboard. You should see mycelial threads beginning to stretch away from the stem butt locations. We had over 25 people attend and found over 50 different species of mushrooms, despite some rather dry/hot conditions leading up to the event. Thursday, 08 July 2010 15:50 Next Meeting: August 7th @ 5pm @ Yellowood State Forest Gathering at the Picnic Shelter Please Bring a Dish and/or Beverage for a Pitch-In Dinner Thanks for all those who attended our first meeting. We had a good attendance, and found there to be a very diversified interest in mushrooms. Several people had a primary interest in bioremediation, others in cultivation, and many in identification and cooking. This diversity should make for many great learning opportunites for our members. Our next scheduled meeting will be an event - a mushroom walk at Yellowood State Forest. This is a chance for people to learn about mushrooms in their natural environments. Attendees walk through the woods, identifying and collecting mushrooms as they go. At the end, we will meet as a group and go over what was found and cook up some of the finds! We will be meeting at 5pm at the shelter near Yellow Wood Lake. We are asking everyone to bring a dish or beverage to share. Camping is available at Yellowood State Forest, and we will plan on camping on this evening. You are welcome to join us. Let us know if you are interested and we can reserve sites in the same area. Just emailsteve@hoosiermushrooms.com. Below is the Park map. Bioblitz/Mycoblitz – June 4th, 5th, and 6th – Brown County State Park Come and help us collect mushrooms throughout the park for these three days. A Bioblitz is basically a survey of all living plants/animals/organisms within a geographic area. The mushroom team will be led by Ron Kerner of indianamushrooms.com. We will be camping at the state park all weekend, so if you are interested in attending and/or camping, just let us know and we can gather all of the mushroom people at adjoining campsites. This is where we will work out the initial structure and goals of the group. We are excited to have you join us and other field investigators for this cooperative, educational and worthwhile endeavor. Like last year, the Bioblitz helped park staff learn what is represented in your particular area of expertise and helped establish property community mapping boundaries, one of our resource management objectives. It will again allow the public to learn the increasingly important role of today’s biologists and botanists in an ever-demanding world. And we hope for you to have a good time with everyone in the rugged and green hills of Brown County, Indiana! Date and Time: While the traditional Bioblitz is a timed event limited to 24 hours, the size of this property (16K a., Indiana’s largest state park) adds more challenges. The Bioblitz will last all weekend. We have a window of arrival and field time to include the entire weekend from 8am, Friday, June 4 to 12 noon, Sunday, June 6, 2010. Please plan on conducting your field investigations for however long you can, anytime during this 2.5 day weekend. All participants need to check in at the Nature Center upon arrival. The Nature Center will serve as “Bioblitz Headquarters.” There you’ll find information, support, reference materials, coffee, snacks, and many colleagues and visitors. Please make sure you check-in before beginning any survey work. Survey Logistics: Survey participants should register first at Bioblitz Headquarters and then meet up with colleagues for field work. Surveying times will vary, of course. The moth and bat crews might meet up Friday evening, for example, and then work the night. Birders will start at dawn. The botanists get to sleep in. So, in order to coordinate the survey work, we’ve designated a leader for each major group/taxon of organisms to be surveyed. Below is a list of taxon leaders (or possible ones) so far. If your taxon is not listed, please contact the Nature Center (812-988-5240) about becoming a taxon leader. Some of you may be the only Bioblitzer for your taxon. All team leaders must fill out the Scientific Rapid Assessment Permit, found on the website. (This is a tentative list of taxa team leaders; we are open to having more teams). During the field work, we encourage species identification by observation only, with minimal disturbance to organisms and habitat. Taxa leaders must fill out the Scientific Rapid Assessment Form. Voucher specimens are not needed for the Bioblitz. There will be opportunity to “showcase” specimens to the public, Saturday, at 11am-4pm, at the Bioblitz Headquarters. Bioblitz Headquarters will be set up for limited specimen work. You’ll find an indoor area with tables, field guides, electrical outlets, and internet access. All Bioblitzers should bring their own field supplies and other equipment – binoculars, nets, specimen vials, UV lights, stereoscopes, Berlese funnels, etc. Please be aware that you’ll need to report your findings to your taxon leader, who in turn will report to the person keeping a tally of all the species we find. Species total will be tabulated throughout the weekend and on view at the Bioblitz Headquarters, with a final tally at noon on Sunday. Reporting Results: Please keep a tally of your species. We will have a list of species, such as the exotic, invasive, or rare and endangered ones that we would like to have GPS coordinates for. All geographic info will be accepted, with gratitude! There will be laptops set up at the Bioblitz headquarters, ready to absorb your survey information. We recognize that some organisms will not easily be identified to species during the Bioblitz. For these cases, try to list morpho-species – the number of members of a given genus or family. This will allow us to get an approximate total number of species for your taxon by the end of the Bioblitz. Visitors: There will be lots of visitors and volunteers throughout the weekend. Most public interpretive programs will take place on Saturday. There is opportunity for you to present an interpretive program for park visitors, i.e., nature hike, “creature feature”, moth sugaring, miss nets, creek walk, or have some visitors help you in the field (lug around equipment, help you spot stuff, etc.). Hands-on field experience would be very effective in educating the public. We will have a “species showcase” at Bioblitz headquarters, Saturday, 11am-4pm. Food and Camping: To show you our appreciation for your hard work, we will waive the park entrance fee for all registered researchers, and provide complimentary camping in our primitive Rally Campground. Also, the Friends of Brown County State Park will offer complimentary snacks for Bioblitz researchers at the Headquarters.
